The serene city of Poughkeepsie and its environs is a much sought-after location for a humdrum of activities as well as the peace and tranquility offered to its residents and visitors. Located in Duchess County, Hudson Valley, New York the city is perched on the bank of the Hudson River. While this upstate gem is seen by many as a place for quiet relaxation it is much more than that as the area is experiencing a renaissance of sorts with numerous projects already completed, and many more projected to be completed or commence in the near future.

Surrounded by an abundance of natural resources and a network of transportation facilities, the city is recognized as a vibrant hub that brings visitors to the area via rail service (MTA), bus services, airports, and an intricate network of roads/highways that service the entire Hudson Valley region. Near the state capital of Albany and the financial center of New York City, Poughkeepsie has experienced many adversities over the years, particularly owing to some dilapidated infrastructures and increase crime statistics in the mid 2000’s. This has changed however since the resurgence of residential and commercial entities that have propelled the growth of the region to new heights, and a rehabilitation plan that is projected to enhance the revitalization strategy for the city and its neighboring communities. A part of this strategy is the enhancement/development of old rail trails that originally serviced the old rail system, to present a value added product for residents and visitors to embrace holistic activities/exercise while enjoying these activities in a safe and natural surroundings.

City of Poughkeepsie Waterfront

Upstate New York is recognized for its natural beauty and has an abundance of hiking trails that are sought out by enthusiasts through the year. Poughkeepsie is no exception, and the opening of the rail trail commonly known as “Walkway Over the Hudson” is no exception. This postindustrial train trellises have been transformed into a scenic walkway and cycling trail that provides a panoramic view of the Hudson River and surrounding areas, while providing amenities for families and groups via parks developed on either sides of the Hudson River; Highland to the west, and Poughkeepsie to the east. A visit to this historic landmark is a must for visitors to the region. The landmark is managed by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and NYS Bridge Authority. The walk over the Hudson is approximately a 3-mile roundtrip and is 160 feet above the river at its highest point. There is an abundance of parking, restroom facilities, and picnic areas on either side (east & west) of the park. There is an emergency response system, and vending kiosks for refreshments and souvenirs. The park is monitored via a high-tech surveillance system to ensure the safety of users.

Visitors to the location can enter from the eastern entrance as well as from the western side in the village of Highland. Both entrances are handicapped accessible, and pets are welcome. However, there are strict guidelines for garbage disposal and caring for pets as this is central for maintaining a healthy/clean environment. There are no entrance fees for the trails.

For visitors wishing to explore more, there are many other historical areas where individuals can visit to experience other varieties of outdoor activities. Places that are nearby include the rail trail which is an extension of the Walkway network meandering in both directions, the Mohonk Preserve and hiking trail in New Paltz, New York, the Catskill and Adirondack Trail. However, for access to these trails there may be a minimal cost. The historic district of Poughkeepsie also offers many options for sightseeing, dining, resort accommodations, colleges, and art and crafts. The development of new residential offerings has solidified Poughkeepsie as one of the most desired location for investment, so housing and new business are the vehicles driving the transformation.

New Developments on the Poughkeepsie Waterfront

Since the pandemic, the Walkway Over the Hudson has seen a surge in visitors as individuals seek ways to get some level of exercise in a safe and less restrictive environment. With the surrounding wellness facilities shuttering their doors to public access, the walkway is the go-to spot for recreational activities. Visitors to the region and in particular the area of Poughkeepsie should not miss out on this experience, and it is guaranteed that once you have visited you will return. The first visit is the hook!!
